Our History

The Observer is a student-run international affairs magazine based in Kingston, Ontario. It was established by Queen’s University students in 2003 as part of an initiative to increase student awareness concerning international events. The Observer is part of the Queen’s International Affairs Association (QIAA). Originally, the Observer published quarterly issues and expanded to additional online publications in 2017. We are now comprised of three writing branches: Online, Print and Student Journalism & External Affairs, and one Marketing branch.

Our Structure

Print: The Print Branch publishes three times throughout the academic year, with each issue focusing on a unique aspect of international affairs. Writers and editors alike contribute op-ed style articles related to the topic, resulting in an informative and collaborative product published digitally and physically.

Online: The Online Branch writes on all topics related to international affairs, including international relations, science, environment, economics, and more. Using an op-ed style, writers choose areas of interest to focus on throughout the semester, honing their skills and their knowledge on international affairs.
